If you take note of the dates, it will give you an idea of how long I have not been able to post this.
This post isn't an obituary, but rather the ramblings of his baby sister, who has not been able to put
her thoughts and memories to paper prior to now. But, alas, I am going to try now.
You see we had a pretty amazing childhood, great parents, and an amazing older sister Wendy. Add an
amazing community to grow up wild and free, like kids could back in the 60s and 70s and it was ideal. I
had the good fortune of being the youngest, now Wendy and Karl might have told you I was 'spoiled' but in
actuality, I was just incredibly lucky! What I learned from both of them would serve me well over my
life, like Wendy teaching me to bake and sew, and model my 4H clothes at the fair. She taught me that
girls grow up and go to college and helped set my determination to pursue higher education. However,
what I got from my brother Karl probably served me even better in life, because he was the fun one!
Karl wasn't afraid of animals, he even raised pigs, yuck! I watched him and I wasn't afraid, even as a
tiny kid to ride my bike a mile to feed calves by myself in the calf barn at the dairy. While I did that
he was out back, forking hay to the milk herd. We loved our animals fiercely. As a teenager, Karl about
killed a man who was driving by our ranch and decided Karl's dog was a coyote and shot him. Dad kept
Karl out of prison most likely, as he intervened as Karl had the guy pulled out of the window of his
pickup and was beating his head against the side of his truck. Karl taught me to love and take care of
the animals we are gifted with in this life. Karl was a cowboy, he rode and made the ranch work, we all
did. It didn't dawn on me until many years later, that he and I rode a LOT of green horses for our Dad.
Horses would come home on the truck, we would start saddling and riding them, never did it cross my mind
how 'unbroke' they were, or how we finished them. Then they went back to town on that truck, no doubt
sold as 'ranch horses, rode by kids' Karl did it, and so I rode them too. Karl gave me that confidence.
If you knew Karl, you won't argue that he had a good sense of humor, quick to laugh, tell a joke or
story, and he even appreciated dark humor when the situation arose that was right. Because Karl was
funny, I always believed I was too! That wasn't the only thing I chose to inherit from Karl. He was a
hell of a good basketball player (not so much baseball, but if you know you know). Karl was pretty tall,
slim and fast on his feet, he loved basketball. He always had a high percentage with free throws. When
it was my turn to play basketball, I felt like I had to be pretty darn good, it was genetics wasn't it??
Whether I was very good or not, we will leave in the history books, but my free throw percentage was 89%
and I BELIEVED I was good at it, and that was Karl's influence and the only thing that mattered in the
end.
Growing up in 4H and then FFA played a big role in all three of us kids' lives. That meant showing
cattle. Boy did we LOVE it! Karl was extra good and eventually found himself showing and working for BB
Cattle, where he made lifelong friends. Showing stock went full circle in my life and my own kids showed
cattle and goats growing up. After they left home, I couldn't let go of the dam goats, and it's true, I
show up at a few goat shows even now dragging some goats. Turns out I was pretty fair at producing good
animals. Thanks Karl, that's your fault too!
Rodeo, I am going to lay that part of my life at Karl's feet as well. We never had time to hardly watch
a rodeo growing up, let along enter one. BUT, when Karl went off to college, he joined the rodeo team
and started riding barebacks. I do not have a clue what inspired him to do that, but I just have a
feeling it had a lot to do with one of our very best friends Dave Dashiell (Julie Dashiell) Dave taught
me a lot about rodeo, and I have to think he did the same with Karl. The year after I started college
the rodeo bug bit me too. Pretty quickly I scrounged up a horse, and with the help of good friends Janet
and Julie ONeil, I started breakaway roping. You know, back before breakaway was PRCA cool, like now! I
haven't entered a rodeo in probably 30 years, but my love of the sport, and involvement in producing
rodeos has only grown. For sparking that in me, I could NEVER thank Karl enough, it's been a huge
enjoyment in my life. Afterall, if Karl could do it, so could little sister Kim.
Work, just plain good old work ethic. Karl worked his whole life, some jobs he loved, some not so much,
but he always put in an effort and always had a job. He was a good role model on how to go to work, make
a living for yourself and your family, and to be self-sufficient. Also, the family motto, was 'You were
looking for a job when you found that one' suited both Karl and I over the years very well. I too, have
always held a job and taken care of business.
My friend Karl. I have to say though, I sure hope that I learned Karl's very best quality, and that was
friendship. Karl was a good brother and a great friend. The type of friend that it didn't matter if you
hadn't talked in a while, Karl picked right up with you where you left off, he never changed. He was a
solid, loyal man, and a good husband to his wife Debbie, dad to his kids Vicki Micone, Lannette Wilson
and Wyatt Smith. He loved his 3 grandkids even more.
Thanks Karl, for being my brother and my friend, and touching who I became in so many ways. I'll catch
you on the flip-flop brother.
