Mrs. Minerva Hull, 90 last August, was buried a few days ago by the side of her husband at Miller cemetery near Scio. Mrs. Hull, who with her family, lived on a farm in the Shelburn community several years ago, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bess Clark in Salem.

Extract from a letter written by Bessie Hull Clark for her mother, Minerva (Nodine) Hull, July 10, 1935.

"After leaving Council Bluffs in April, one night in early June, the train had reached the end of a day's trek and were forced to pitch camp for the night on the banks of the Platte River when they discovered there were 500 Sioux Indians camped about a mile up the river. A number of the Indians came and whooped and circled around their camp, taking note of their powers of resistance and prying into the possessions of the immigrants to see if it would pay them (the Indians) to pull a massacre when darkness of night covered all. Of course, you can only image the feelings of those men in the train and the helplessness of those women and children and their fright at seeing such a murderous horde spying around planning their destruction and what must have been their thoughts momentarily as the night hours passed expecting to be killed. They could hear the yells and the ki yi's of the Reds in the distance and knew they greatly outnumbered the train. Minerva was a little fourteen year old girl and no one slept in the camp that night. The train men armed and held themselves in readiness for any attack. But the reason the Reds were so hostile was because the Whites were camped on their reservation. However, Uncle Sam's soldiers were in Fort (Kearney) across the river from the immigrants and the Indians. At daybreak, a messenger came scurrying into camp and told the train to move on as quickly as possible, as the U.S.S. were not going to be able to hold the Sioux in check much longer. They had been war dancing and working themselves into a frenzy all night and were ready to swarm for attack at any minute. So the train lost no time in ambling forth and were accompanied and guarded by a small squad of soldiers the entire day, thus enabling the Whites to get far off the reservation and out of the path of the "Injuns". Thus ended just one of the many terrors of the pioneers of the plains."
