George Hull says, My father, in the arly days before the railroad was built through eastern Oregon, freighted merchandise from Umatilla landing on the Columbia over the Blue Mountains. He went down the Grande Ronde River to LaGrande, through Ladd Canyon and across the Powder River Valley to Baker City. I was a small boy, but I remenber seeing father father start from home in his big wagon driving four or maybe it was six horses.

Sudden Death
William Hull of Shelburn and who had been in ill health for several months because of heart trouble and dropsy died suddenly Monday while sitting in a chair about the fire.
Mr. Hull has resided in the vicinity of Shelburn for many years and was well advanced in years. He had just sold his little farm and was expecting to move elsewhere hoping a change would be beneficial to his health. Mr. Hull was a good citizen and was liked and respected by all who knew him.

William H, Hull was born in Hampshire county, Virginia on the nineteenth of September, 1842 and passed away at Shelburn, Oregon March 6, 1917, his age being 74 years, 5 months and 17 days. When but a small boy he with his parents emigrated to Adams county Illinois where he grew to manhood. In 1863, when 21 years of age he crossed the plains and settled near Baker City, Oregon. On January 23, 1870 he wedded Miss Minerva Nodine. To this union were born 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. The names of whom are: Frederick of St. Louis, Mo, George of Harrison, Idaho, Lin and Charles of Wallace Idaho, Ruby of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Lloyd Tindall and Mrs. A. H. Pipes of Shelburn and Mrs. D.I. Caldwell of Stayton, Oregon. Mr. Hull moved from Baker City to Shelburn in 1893 and in 1898 he moved to the place where he has since resided.
By occupation Mr. Hull was a farmer and stock man. He possessed in a large measure a public spirit. In the year 1876 he was elected to the office of tax assessor of Baker County for one term of two years, the duties of which he faithfully performed. His public work in the community of Shelburn as member of the Shelburn school board and supervisor of road district number 14 of Linn county may be mentioned with credit. He had the rare qualities of a sturdy pioneer and frontiersman, was possessed with strong constitution and iron will with large intellect, he undertook where others failed, duty was his motto to serve was his delight. This made his life a very intensive one and in all probability shortened his days upon earth. I home he was hospitable and kind and a very obliging neighbor. We shall miss him but fond memories will linger which we shall love to cherish.
